Volunteer with us

Help Winnipeg’s community effort to provide Christmas Hampers during the holiday season.

Fundraise - Organize your own special event (for example - birthday/dinner parties, concerts, bake sales, auctions, pancake breakfast, casual days). Encourage friends, relatives or colleagues to donate to the Christmas Cheer Board. Approximately half of hamper contents are purchased and paid for through the generosity of Winnipeggers. Please register your event with us. A Christmas Cheer Board administrator will send you our logo for advertising your event.

Sponsor a Christmas Hamper - become a part of our Feed-a-Family program. What a great way to celebrate the holiday season with your group. Contact us at (204) 989-5680. We'll assign you a hamper family and provide you with a list of hamper contents, contact the family, build your hamper, and make arrangements to deliver your hamper.

Deliver Christmas hampers - Help the Cheer Board deliver 9000 hampers. No need to register, drop by 947 St. James Street between December 7-23. Warehouse hours are 9am-8pm weekdays and 9am-5pm weekends. Learn more about delivering hampers.

Knit hats, mitts, neck-warmers - Are you handy at knitting? Warm, hand-crafted outerwear is always a hit with parents and kids. Finished pieces must be handed in by early November to be included in children's gifts. Wool is available for pickup mid-November, please Contact the Cheer Board if you would like to help.

Organize food/toy drive - Organize donation drop-off locations at your workplace, school, or club.

Group volunteering

Unfortunately groups cannot be accommodated in the warehouse other than to deliver hampers.

Community groups can help by participating in the Feed-a-Family program, collecting food, toys, or donations.

All hampers are packed by grades 4-12 school children. If you’d like to register your class please complete the School Hamper Packing Registration form.

Family volunteering

Families with children under age 14 may wish to deliver hampers, collect food or toys, or put together a hamper for a family and deliver it under the Feed-a-Family program.

Volunteering at the administrative office/warehouse

Age requirements

Youth aged 14 and 15 are encouraged to volunteer alongside an adult who accompanies them and provides supervision. Adolescents 16 and older may volunteer on their own.

Young children cannot accompany volunteers on their shifts. Safety is important to our team, and this is a warehouse environment with heavy equipment.

Casual, dropin volunteering

December 1 - have some time in the next week to help out at the warehouse?  Spend an hour or two or a day, whatever works for you.  Please check about timing - 204-989-5680

Scheduled volunteering

Depending on your availability during the months of November and December there are various scheduled volunteer opportunities.

We are able to accommodate volunteers who wish to volunteer for full-time or part-time hours. During the last couple of weeks before Christmas we need people who can spare time to take on 4-6 shifts helping us to distribute hampers at the warehouse and delivering hampers.

Scheduled shifts are generally four hours during November/December:

  • 9:00am – 1:00pm
  • 1:00pm – 5:00pm
  • 5:00pm – 8:00pm

A December 2019 Winnipeg Free Press article describes best our volunteers' experiences at the Cheer Board.

December 1 - Thanks to the generosity of Winnipeggers our admin/warehouse volunteer roles have been filled.

Hamper delivery volunteers are needed starting December 7.
