Christmas Cheer Board
It truly takes a community.
For over 106 years, Winnipeggers have rallied behind the Christmas Cheer Board, helping us help thousands of people across the city.
When we started this season in October, we were concerned that times were hard for so many and wondering if we’d have enough to reach everyone. But as the season rolled closer, there each and every one of you were, arriving at our warehouse with a truckload of food or a car full of toys.
And together we made the holidays better for tens of thousands across Winnipeg.
This year marked five years since I stepped into these big shoes.
For each of these five years, I’ve seen people come to us to both give and receive.
Businesses across the city who spring into action each year. Some for the first time, others for over 25 years or more. Packing hampers, wrapping toys and hosting toy and food drives. Each organization stepping forward because they know that together we can make a difference in the eyes of a child, in the eyes of someone in need.
Volunteers helping out for and realizing the sheer magnitude of what happens behind the curtain for 12 short weeks each year. Others celebrating 10, 20 and 30 years volunteering with the Cheer Board to create an annual miracle.
Volunteers who delivered hampers for days and sometimes weeks, venturing out into the frigid temperatures to get boxes of food and gifts to children and adults.
Over 19,500 households reached out to us for support this year.
While many have received hampers over the years, there were also many new recipients. Hamper recipients picking up were also able to receive a little extra due to the incredible donations we received.
The Cheer Board is a mirror. Reflecting the beauty, kindness and the generosity that makes Winnipeg an incredibly special place.
Thank you to our friends, partners, and each and every person who decided to help this little organization make the holidays a bit brighter for so many once again.
Happy New Year.
